Spring and autumn are loveliest
Hangzhou is at its most beautiful in spring and autumn, when West Lake and the surrounding hills are mild and the humidity eases. Since a Songcheng visit is partly an outdoor park day, and since most people pair it with West Lake, these shoulder seasons are the most comfortable times to build the western-Hangzhou day the show sits within. Autumn in particular, with cooler air and clear light, is a classic time to see the lake.
Summer heat, winter chill
Hangzhou summers are hot and humid, which makes the outdoor park portion tiring even though the theatre itself is air-conditioned — so pace the day and carry water. Winters are cool and can be damp; the show is unaffected, but the park and any West Lake time will be brisker. Neither stops a visit, but both are worth dressing for, and both shape how much time you'll want to spend outdoors around the show.
Avoid the peak holidays if you can
The single biggest timing factor is China's public holidays — especially the National Day 'Golden Week' in early October, the Labour Day break in early May, and the Lunar New Year period. Hangzhou and West Lake are among the country's most popular domestic destinations, and during these weeks the city, the lake and Songcheng are extraordinarily crowded, with long entry lines and packed showtimes. If your dates are flexible, steering clear of these periods makes for a far calmer visit.
Booking around your dates
Because the show runs year-round, you can book fairly close to your dates outside the peak holidays — though in busy periods, holding a showtime ahead is wise as popular slots fill. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and reserve-now-pay-later on many listings, let you lock a day and slot early and still adjust if your Hangzhou plans move. Pick a showtime that leaves room for the park and, ideally, West Lake.
